Durgapur : In India, the teacher has always held a place of great respect. Since ancient times, the Indian tradition has regarded the Guru not merely as a source of knowledge, but as a guide who shows the right path in life. This is why teachers continue to play an important role in society and in nation-building.

Every year, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5 in India. The day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned philosopher, educationist and former President of India. The occasion is dedicated to recognising and appreciating the contribution of teachers towards society and the nation.

Teachers Give More Than Education

The role of a teacher is not limited to teaching lessons inside a classroom. Teachers help students develop discipline, confidence, responsibility, moral values and social awareness. They identify the talent of students and encourage them to work towards their goals.

For a student, a teacher is someone who provides encouragement during failure and teaches humility in success. Through knowledge and experience, teachers prepare students to face the challenges of life.

The Foundation of Nation-Building

Every doctor, engineer, scientist, administrator, soldier, journalist, entrepreneur and professional begins their journey as a student. Behind their education and development, there is always the contribution of one or more teachers.

Therefore, teachers are rightly considered the foundation of nation-building. The students they educate and guide eventually contribute to the progress and development of society and the country.

The Changing Role of Teachers

We live in an age of technology, where students can access information through the internet, smartphones and artificial intelligence. However, information alone cannot replace the guidance of a teacher.

A teacher helps students understand how to use knowledge responsibly, think critically and make the right decisions. In the modern education system, teachers have become not only educators but also mentors, motivators and role models.

Respect for Teachers Should Not Be Limited to One Day

Teachers’ Day is not merely an occasion to present flowers or gifts to teachers. It is a day to express gratitude for their dedication, patience, knowledge and contribution towards shaping the lives of students.

A teacher’s words of advice, encouragement and guidance can remain with a student throughout life. Therefore, respect for teachers should not be limited to Teachers’ Day; it should remain a permanent part of our society and culture.

A teacher is like a lamp that burns itself to spread the light of knowledge in the lives of others.

Teachers do not merely teach students; they give direction to their dreams, build their character and prepare them to become responsible citizens.

Respect for teachers is respect for education, and respect for education is respect for the bright future of the nation.

On Teachers’ Day, heartfelt greetings and sincere respect to all teachers who continue to educate, inspire and shape the future of India.
